In November 2021, Senegal’s industrial production excluding cotton ginning increased by 7.1% compared to the same period of 2020, according to data from the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD) based in Dakar.
“This development is in relation to the performances noted in the environmental (+ 62.7%) and extractive (+ 51.8%) industries”, underlines the ANSD. Still according to this structure, the situation observed in the extractive industries is explained by the good performance of the production of metal ores (+ 66.3%) and other products of the extractive industries (+ 33.3%). Likewise, production in the first eleven months of 2021 increased by 36.7%, compared to that of the corresponding period of 2020.
As for the performance of the production activity of environmental industries, it is due to the good performance of the activity of collection, treatment and disposal of waste (+ 62.6%). Moreover, notes ANSD, over the first eleven months of 2021, the production of environmental industries increased by 44.9%, compared to the same period in 2020.
However, industrial production was hampered by the decline in the production of electricity, gas and water and that of other manufacturing industries. In fact, compared to the same month of 2020, the production of electricity, gas and water fell by 0.6% in November 2021 due to the drop in water production (-12.0%) over the period. Similarly, over the first eleven months of 2021, the production of electricity, gas and water rose by 5.1% compared to its level for the corresponding period in 2020. For its part, production manufacturing contracted 3.9% compared to the same month of 2020. << This decline is mainly attributable to the underperformance noted in the production of worked leather and travel articles, shoes (-79.7%), metallurgical and foundry, metalwork, metalworking product (-53.9%) and textiles and clothing items (-34.6%), ”notes the ANSD. On the other hand, agrifood production (+ 4.2%), chemicals (+ 4.3%), that of mineral materials (+ 15.6%) as well as the refining and coking activity (+ 18.4% ) performed well over the period under review.
In the first eleven months of 2021, the output of manufacturing industries jumped 15.5%, compared to its level for the corresponding period in 2020.
At the end of the first eleven months of 2021, the industrial production of Senegal increased by 18.7%, compared to the corresponding period of 2020. In addition, at the end of November 2021, the cotton ginning activity emerged in increase of 26.4%, compared to the cumulative over the first eleven months of 2020.
