Less than 24 hours after posting a tweet from his official account in which a world map is displayed with Morocco amputated from its Sahara, US President Joe Biden deleted his controversial post. No explanation is given by the White House.
In the tweet broadcast Tuesday evening, August 3, 2021, the American president praised his vaccine diplomacy with 110 million doses of vaccines offered to “more than 60 countries”.
Biden’s tweet did not go unnoticed in the Algerian press, unilaterally aligned with the official position of their country, the main supporter of the Polisario, a movement claiming the independence of this territory formerly colonized by Spain.
The information is relayed by the official Algerian press agency, APS, in a tone of triumphalism. “Western Sahara appears distinct and separate from Morocco, far from the map given by the former US ambassador to Rabat.” Same analysis of the El Watan site which ignites: “US President Joe Biden welcomed the contribution of the United States in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic on Tuesday evening, in a message posted on his Twitter account where he displayed a world map where the territory of Western Sahara appears separate from that of the Kingdom of Morocco ”. Pushing the cap even further, Patriotic Algeria headlines: “Biden re-establishes the state of the Sahara”.
Under the Biden administration, the various American departments, like the Department of State, Defense and the CIA, display the complete map of the Kingdom including its Sahara, recalls the Moroccan site 360.Afrique.
According to the FAR-Morocco Forum, citing corroborating sources relayed by the letter “Infomediaire”, the publication of the map of Morocco amputated of its Sahara, on Joe Biden’s Twitter account, would only be a technical error that the administration American immediately corrected. Joe Biden therefore remains aligned with the major decision of his predecessor, Donald Trump, who recognized the Moroccan character of the Sahara as part of a vast plan to normalize the Arab world with Israel.
